In Japanese songs I have heard this really very pretty instrument playing. It sounds kind of like a violin but very high pitched. You will here it a lot in Oriental restaurants, but I can never find out what it is.
Help?

It's the Erhu. It's the most popular traditional Chinese instrument, but they may mistake it for Japanese and play it in Japanese restaurants.
