this is from a co-worker at my job. she has created a word doc and would like to do the following:

I need the name that the letter is sent to, which appears on the first page, to appear automatically in the headers of page 2 and 3 without having to enter it manually. Like a code that references to the name on page one.

To Insert headers and footers (from the MW WORD HELP TOOL)
Do one of the following:
Create the same header or footer for each page
1. On the View menu, click Header and Footer to open the header or footer area on a page.
2. To create a header, enter text or graphics in the header area.
3. To create a footer, click Switch Between Header and Footer on the Header and Footer toolbar to move to the footer area, and then enter text or graphics.
4. If necessary, format text by using buttons on the Formatting toolbar.
5. When you finish, click Close on the Header and Footer toolbar.

Agree with John, however you will have to setup the document so that the header will not appear on the first page.

First, at the end of the first page, click Insert, Break, Next Page
The letter will continue at the top of the next page.
Now, go to the top of file
click View
Headers/Footer
cl the Page Setup button on the Header/Footer toolbar
cl Different First Page
when you come to the header for the first page, type nothing
click the "show next" button on the Header toolbar
type what you want here
click Close

click the Print Preview button on the Standard Toolbar
You will see no header on p. 1, with a header on subsequent pages

This can be done with 'fields' in Word. All you need to do is create a field by inserting a new field (click help and you will find out how to do it) and then type in the name that you want.

And in the headers of subsequent pages, insert a reference (again, hit F1) to the field that you just created in page 1.
Try and let me know.

The best way to do this would be to create a mail-merge.

If you go to TOOLS, LETTERS and MAILING, I think there's a wizard there that'll walk you through.

Click view, and then headers and footers.
