As long as you put an appearence every so often just to be sociable then I think that is more then enough. He must realize that his staff have a life outside work so don't feel guilty about not going to every single one of them....

Go once in a while. You say you're not that keen on the idea, but I'm not sure which part of it you don't like. If you don't drink, just go and have a soda. If you just don't like going with coworkers to a bar, just politely tell him you appreciate the offer, but you just don't feel like it that night. Go sometimes though (I'm getting the impression that it's not a religious belief issue "drinking is (or bars are) bad", but more of just a feeling that it's either unprofessional or just socially uncomfortable). It's a good way to compromise and be a good sport. Just like in a relationship, get your way sometimes and not others. He's probably just trying to get people on a social level so they feel friendly at work or to boost moral by showing his appreciation, unless he goes overboard (like taking them to strip clubs or something). Maybe he had a boss in the past that was a total jerk and totally unappreciative and he's just trying not to be "that boss". At an old job I had a couple of the attorneys had a happy hour every Friday. Sometimes I went, sometimes I didn't. They weren't the partners, though. It was fun and it made dealing with them at work less itimidating.
However, if it's a strict moral principle or religious belief that you do not agree with alcohol or going to bars or taverns, then just explain it to him. If he's the great boss that he is trying to be, maybe he will adjust the social agenda a little bit once in a while to make it a bit more comfortable for everyone. He may assume that everyone is ok with it, since most people probably are.

You should at least go a couple of times. To be honest, I'm kind of jealous, where I work my boss is not the nicest person in the world, which makes it a little harder to work with them, I wish we would all go out for drinks once and a while. It seems like the whole office does fun stuff except for our group, so go ahead you might have a good time.

Honestly, go once or twice. You don't have to drink - just have a coke or something, if you're not comfortable drinking with everyone. But seriously, you may find that you have a good time with your co-workers in a social setting! When you get to know people on a personal level (even if it's not a deep friendship) even a little bit, it DOES make a difference in your working relationships.

If it's the whole group, I don't see what the problem is. When I worked for a different company, several of us from several different departments gathered for happy hour nearly every Friday. Drinks, free munchies, the chance to get to know others from within the company, or socialize with your coworkers outside of work. Just watch your alcohol intake (and I'm sure no one is forcing you to drink alcohol if you don't want to) and enjoy yourself.
However, if it's a one on one thing, this could be construed as sexual harassment.

I can see your point.....there is nothing wrong with you having an occasional drink.....but if your boss hasn't said anything ....I wouldn't worry about it .....but should he say something....you might trying telling him there is "life" after work and you've already put your hours in for the day.

You might want to watch that. He may be trying to see how his employees act when they are not at work. If you act in an inappropriate manner, you'll be one of the first to go when the company starts downsizing. Be careful!!!!

If you want to get sacked or promoted, one of teh two, sleep with him.
If you wanto to just get promoted, go out once in a while with teh boss and have a fun time.
If you want to be left out of the office gossip, become unhappy maybe, and eventually leave - never go
My girlfriend is Muslim. Her work was always trying to take her out to the pub, that is where everything social occurred. She never went -1. because she didn't like tehm 2. all the girls behave liked sluts around their bosses and she didn't want to be seen as the same as them
in the end she got the sack, mistakenly - but someone who didn't have to sack her - it was a big mess. she got compensation but she codl have sued for a lot more.
so if you want a quick buck - get sacked for not going to teh pub then sue

Nobody says you have to go EVERY time, but it probably would be a good career move to go once in a while just to socialize. You don't have to drink. Order a pop.

I dont see any problem with that, as long as the whole staff are invited. And you can decline him politely if you have anything to do.
