Other religions seem to get a pass (with little exception) even though their beliefs are just as hokey as Christianity?

(agnostic myself)

It would seem to be because atheism is the primary target of Christians, at least the zealous, "certain" Christians who condemn people to hell as though they were empowered to make that decision.

I think that because atheism is perceived as a polar opposite to Christianity by both parties, they have a wonderful time attacking each other. Both parties are absolutely sure of their convictions and consequently the debate is impassioned and full of righteous indignation. It's a safe debate because of two factors. The certainty of the positions and the fact that neither position can be verified, so no one is ever really "wrong."

I suspect that those on both sides of the question, being certain, would hesitate to venture into agnostic territory, where the questions live and there is no certainty.

First of all, I think what they target is a certain "type" of Christianity, but some reasons for that are: Exactly what you said about the Constitution--you'd be surprised to know how many Christian fundamentalist think that the part about keeping religion out of the law only applies to "other" religions. Buddhists don't have the numbers or the inclination to enforce their beliefs on everyone through law. Secondly, a lot of athiests grew up in Christian homes or surrounded by Christianity. They KNOW the lies, contradictions, evasions and practices of Christianity. It's like the proverb about the poacher and the gameskeeper.

Not that I can speak for all Wiccans, but I don't know any follower of Wicca who is trying to get laws passed to govern "nonbelievers" based on our teachings. I also have yet to see if a single instance where Wiccan parents are trying to get herbology and crystal work taught in science class as fact (cough*IntelligentDesign*cough). A few atheists occasionally say mean things about other religions, but usually it's along the lines of "they're all fake". You also don't see us telling atheists they're wrong, because we don't teach that our way is the ONLY way like Christianity does.

I do not know if Christianity is the primary target or not. I am sure that all religions are targeted. There are however more sects within Christianity than in other religions perhaps prompting your question.

The following is a broad generalization, yes, I know not all Christians are like this.

It's because of their in-your-face approach toward people they deem in need of salvation. It's the way they are so convinced that they are the only ones that know the truth and everyone else is deceived by their favorite bogeyman, Satan. If you think about the irony of that, it's really pretty funny. Satan's sin was arrogance, their self-righteous attitude is incredibly arrogant as well. So who is it they serve?

Primarily its seeming omnipresence. It seems to be everywhere, it's ingrained in the very culture of which we are a part, written into our laws, etc.

I don't see many laws being passed by Wiccans, or Hindus, or Buddhists, or Asatru or... Sure, in India, you have plenty of Hindus doing it, but there's something different about Christianity...

To be more exact, about Christianity and Islam. Both are absolutely unique in the world because only they have a built in compunction to convert the world. In short, they're the only two with an agenda.

Hindus, when they vote, tend to set religion aside and vote as they feel is best for their society. Same with most Buddhists, same with most pagans, same with most Jews.

Christians and Muslims, however, tend to try to make their religions into the law of the land (witness: Blue Laws, attempts to legislate abortion for religious reasons [I am pro-life/anti-choice and want to see this law passed ... for moral, not religious reasons... I'm an atheist after all]). They use their books to hate and discriminate and deny the equality of ALL people.

That's a problem. And it's a problem that needs to be solved.

The news hype around them. The obvious hypocrisy among many church leaders will get front page news anyday. If it's a popular focus in the news - the most popular religion mentioned- then it will be a focus for anyone in opposition. Ideal for atheists to say "see, another reason not to believe in Christianity (or God)."

I am more agnostic then Christian....but I think all religions are silly. We tend to target Christians more because they tend to be more vocal. It isn't Sceintologists trying to get Bibles in Courts....it's Christians. Although I certainly find Scientologists awfully silly. As an agnostic Jew....I dislike Islam as much or more than Christianity.

Peace!
Maybe they are just jealous of Christians. Christians are at peace with themselves and do not to have any worries. It's more fun to be a believer. When we worship the Lord there's a lot of singing and dancing and shouting. Everyone is having fun. What about atheists? What do they do?
God bless

If you really want to know with certainty, then you must realize that Christianity is not hokey.
What drives the attacks on Christianity is, believe it or not, the work of Satan.
He attacks it because he knows how real it is. Why should he bother with anyone that's already involved with a false religion? He already has them.
And, the only way to find out FOR YOURSELF just how real God is, would be for you to do YOUR OWN rresearch and reading of the BIBLE. Read it for yourself and when you come to something you don't understand, ask a long-time mature Christian that can help. Once you get a good enough understanding, then you decide what you will believe. Take care.
