It is said the premies can take up to two years to catch up, and since he was a "real" premie, and not just the 6 weeks early that mine was, I would think he may need that whole two years more than a less premature baby would.

At 17 months my babies were expressing themselves with words but not really fully talking with sentences. They were walking of course.

They were not toilet trained. They pretty much just kind of played with their toys. They would look at books, but they did that really, really, young. They would play with toys aimed at children their age and maybe toys aimed at two-year-olds.

They ate and drank by themselves, but there would be some foods I may help with (something that may be hot and required a spoon).

They would push something like a little shopping cart around and would put stuff in it. They would ride little riding toys meant for toddlers, but didn't ride a tricycle or anything "advanced".

I dressed them.

If we went out they'd sit in a restaurant high-chair and eat. I'd make sure I had some toy or book to keep them busy.

If someone sat down and played with them they'd go along with whatever the older person/child was doing and copy; but they wouldn't sit down with another 17-month old and interact. (Then again, there weren't all that many other children their age around.)

They slept in a crib but could get out if they wanted to.

My son is 19 months today. At 17 months he was walking well, running, had a vocabulary of about 50 understandable words, climbing, etc...

My nephew is 17 1/2 months. He is just now beginning to walk, just started climbing about a week ago and only has maybe a 12 word vocab. He was 5 wks early.

Every kid is different.

my son just made it to 17months three days ago lol.. he was born five weeks early (8pound 13 so i'm glad for that!!), he is walking running climbing, jumping and hopping, he says about 60 words in english about 40 in maori and about 35 in samoan, he doesn't have day naps, says when he wants to go poos, and can feed himself with minimal mess with a spoon or fork, he is 13kg and 86 cm in a size 1pants and 1-2 tops,
he sleeps in his own bed, can push the pedals on a trike for a little while, reads books by pointing and naming the pictures and points to the words when i read (not at the correct words lol), he likes kicking balls into goals, putting things away, sweeping, putting on his shoes and pants, but doesn't like playing babies that are smaller than him, prefers wrestling with the ones twice his size that squash him lol
all children go their own pace though and it's amazing how much they can catch up, i have 5yr old twin cousins and one used to be really slow compared to the other when they were babies and now theyr at the same level.

My daughter is 17 months old & she isn't talking as much as I thought she would. In fact, about the only thing she says (& knows what shes saying) is "Bye!" She does walk all over the place, though. She still takes a bottle at bedtime & can feed herself while sitting in her high chair. Of course you know..all kids are different.

All kids develop at different rates, my daughter has a huge vocabulary, she already speaks in little sentences, she feeds herself, asks for things she wants to eat, draws with crayons, but my neice is 16 months old and does none of these things but is already potty trained. Just relax i'm sure your little one is fine!
