We did not have President, in 1947. In 1950, only India became Republic and President Rajendra Prasad, took over as President on 26th January, 1950. In 1947, we had Governor General - Lord Mountbatten, owing allegiance to Queen of England, under British Commonwealth.

India became free on 26 January 1950 and not 15 August 1947 as taught in school books. Lord Montbattein remained the Governor General as representative of British Queen who remained the Head of Indian State. Later C. Rajagopalachrai became the first and last Indian Born Governor General representing the British Crown in India. The chiefs of Armed forces remained British and did not wish to fight Pakistani Army headed by British officers. This is the reason Nehru failed in Kashmir. It is a poetic justice that Jinnah was also Governor General of Pakistan which along with India attained Dominion stataus and not full independence on August 1947 and died before Pakistan became independent in 1956 with enactment of Constitution. Neither Gandhi nor Jinnah could see Free India or Pakistan.
