I think that 99% of the people here have stated the blindingly obvious. I dont think that was what you meant by your question.

gymnasium sounds old fashioned and a bit gay, too. Gym is usually used by younger people and sounds more modern

Probably not too much if you mean just between how the words are spelled.. gym is an abbr. for gymnasium, but it seems that there actually is a difference. a gym is more of a workout, get in shape kind of place, where-as a gymnasium is for cheering, tumbling, gymnastics, etc. I'm sure that at both there is a area that both of those can be done interchangeably, but i think it might be separate for a reason... not too sure. hope that helped.

Today the term gymnasium (plural: gymnasiums or gymnasia) is used in the sense of a sports facility. Gyms today are multi-use facilities, offering a range of sporting and physical activities, alongside such things as massages, and other things usually attributed to a health spa.

Just be glad we didn't opt to call our sports grounds palaestra, which is the ancient Greek term, or we'd be going to the pal to do our athletics training. Gymnastium was abbreviated to gym because it's quicker and easy to say and write.
