Absolutely the best of all exercises; however, you ought to combine it with a sensible diet. Just as important is your water intake (not from the pool :) though). Swimming not only strengthens all of your muscles, it also prevents an array of health problems (i.e., cardivascular problems, back problems, etc.) Give yourself some time before you can see the results and never, ever give up. If you have the opportunity, swim daily. Your metabolism will increase, thus, losing weight is much easier. Set a goal to swim so and so many laps. Increase it slowly and you will see the results. Your body will thank you for it. My great aunt is 98 and still swims at least 3 times per week! If that isn't testimony all in itself. Good luck and keep up the good work! Don't get discouraged by little setbacks, like if you don't feel good some days. You can always pick up where you left off and again start increasing your number of laps. Like with any exercise, start slowly. At least you don't need warm-ups as you do in every other sport :) But don't overdo it either, or your shoulders will look like those of a bodybuilder :) Swimming is also good to strengthen your breast muscles and keep them firm rather than saggy. Again, good luck and have fun...

It depends on what your goals are. Swimming, like all physical activity, burns energy, but it also helps build and tone muscle. While added muscle mass can help you to lose weight (muscle burns more calories than fat does), regular swimming tends to bulk certain muscles, like in the shoulder and back (the "V" look), a look to which women don't normally aspire. And I've noticed that female swimmers tend to have a layer of "fat" on their healthy bodies, probably as a result of the cool water temperatures. In other words, if by losing weight, you mean you want to slim down, swimming alone will only take you so far. It is an excellent form of exercise, however, and combined with other activities that don't tend to bulk (e.g., jogging/walking), you should have no problem to lose weight/slim down.

Swimming overall is probably the best all in one exercise there is. It'll halp loose weight, but will also allow you to tone and it's great cardio. Look at professional swimmers...all long lean thin, but strong, muscle. Though if loosing weight is your main goal it's one of the slower ways I've found.

Swimming is very good exercise but needs to be incorporated into a weight loss programme i.e. monday swim tuesday aerobics wednesday tennis thursday jog etc., all this coupled with a balanced diet should be rewarded by weight loss.

Very good for you as it works all the muscles in the body and it also tricks the brain because you don't really sweat as much because you are in the water the whole time! If you maintain a healthy living style and eat right, only 3 meals a day and smaller portions, you will definitely see a difference after some time.
good luck and keep it up!!
