It is not illegal to just put your dog in the car but it's not very safe for your dog if it is not car trained. There are harnesses that attach to your seat belts that keep dogs very safe but I doubt that helps you right now. If it were my dog (and I have never had less than 4) I would put him in the very back and block his access to the front and limit his movements. Most dogs are good riders and if he is hurt he is probably not going to want to be roaming around anyway. Good luck and I hope he is okay.

I'm not aware of any restrictions on transporting a dog in a car. However, it's safer for you and the dog if the dog is restrained either in a crate or with a seat belt.

If the dog has never traveled in a car before, she may be distressed or even panic. Dogs who panic in the car can cause the driver to be distracted or in some cases, the dog actually gets in the way (in lap, on steering wheel or gear shift) and can cause a wreck aside from the fact that a panicked animal can be difficult to get out of the vehicle without it running off. Additionally, if you're an accident, the dog becomes a very large and dangerous projectile which could seriously injure or kill you as it flies unrestrained through the vehicle and many dogs have been killed in this manner as well.

There are seat belts designed for a dog to help restrain it in a seat but generally you need to take some time to train the dog that it will be restrained (this can also be distressing if not properly prepared in advance).

A crate is the best option because it not only contains the dog but it also allows the dog some freedom of movement and also provides another small margin of protection for the dog in the event of an accident.

Remember that if you're in an accident, it's not the duty of emergency personnell to make sure your dog is safe so if they are assisting you, a dog may escape from a car and be hit or lost.

As someone on the road a lot with my dogs and in contact with people who transport their dogs on a regular basis, I see a lot of unnecessary heartache because something occurred that was not planned and could have been prevented by properly restraining the dog while in the car.

Food for thought.

We literally can travel thousands of miles a year going to dog shows & field events. Our dogs will never leave the driveway without being crated. That is simply because over the years we have seen the aftermath of what can happen with a dog loose in a car or truck more than once.
I hardly expect someone to go to the extreme of the pic below just to take their dog to the vet, but IMHO there is no excuse for not having some sort of crate to put in your car.

I have a collapsable kennel I put my dog in when we go in my van. Works great, keeps the dog contained and prevents the dog from distracting me when I'm driving.

If you don't have the option of the kennel, and you think your dog may move about a lot, our trainer suggests shutting the leash in a door, with just enuf length for the dog to move about a little, but prevents them from getting up front or moving too much.

Put a sheet on the seats so that she doesn't fill the car with haairs. I put my dog at the back, tied with his leash so that he doesn't come in front, but the leash must be long enough for him to stand, sit or lie down without choking.

If you can put her in a crate, that's the best way.

Otherwise, if you think she might jump around you might want to tie her in the back so she can't distract you while you're driving. Please make sure to tie her safely so she can't choke herself.

Otherwise most dogs ride in the car just fine. My bassets travel in the car all the time, they go to sleep when we start moving.

my dog used to love going in the car, he would get up near the window and let the wind blow his ears back and he would have this goofy grin.

Drive your dog slowly around the block a couple of times and see how she likes it.
If she doesn't get all stressed and doesn't try to climb into your lap it should be fine.
