My co workers ear infection has been contant pain for about two weeks. The steroids have not relieved the pain, so they are suggesting piercing the ear drum to allow the fluid to drain and hopefully stop the pain. Has anyone had this done? Does it hurt? It's sounds painful. Should she be concerned?

This was advised from an ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat) Specialist.

Oh my god never do that . piercing your ear drum will make you totally deaf I do not know who told you this but just read this answer immediately for heaven's sake and stop this rot and contact an ENT specialist immediately.

First I hope this is only going to be done by a medical professional and not something that your co worker is planning to do at home. Permanent damage could result if it is done wrong. Putting a small pin hole in the ear drum has been used to relieve pressure before. If the pressure is not relieved, the ear drum can burst. I have had my eardrum burst before and I am not deaf from it, although I do have a scar on my ear drum from it. It hurt like the devil when it burst, but it was followed by a flow of fluid from my hear and a great relief of pain. So, yes I can and has been done, but needs to be done under medical supervision and certainly not at home.

I'd have thought it would make you a bit deaf! But if it's done under medical supervision, there will at least not be much risk of clumsiness, and I can see the logic in draining the ear drum.
It probably will hurt, but could she ask for an anaesthetic whilst it's being done?

I've not had this done, I must admit. Best of luck to your co-worker!

ENT is correct it is a valid option. My children had a bad cold that broke the ear drum on one of them, they heal but the hearing may not quite be as good. Resource for other (non infection) pain The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies.

The ENT is the proffesional. Im sure it might be unconfortable and maybe a bit painful but Im sure they might give her some kind sedation. Im sure she is in alot of pain now so trying it won thurt. An ear ache is just as bad as a tooth ache

First confirm whether it is a pain due to infection or is it a nerve pain. If it is a nerve pain nothing except acupuncture can treat it! And you will unnecessarily damage the drum.

Are you sure the Dr. wasn't talking about inserting tubes? That is a very common & easy procedure that is done in the doctors office & is not painful at all. If her Dr. is talking about stabbing it with a needle...I'd be concerned.

I have had that done with no pain medication.. Need-less to say, it the was the worst pain I've ever felt. I was held down by nurses and screamed bloody murder. Don't ever let anyone stick a needle in your ear. Unless you're on some strong medication. I'm still traumatized lol now every time I fly my ear hurts and I require pain medication. I also can't dive or jump in a pool, just swim around.
