Judaism originated in the Middle East. There is such a gulf between the culture depicted in the Bible and the Judaism of the historic period (starting around the beginning of the Christian Era) that historians of religion have a different name for the first.

You need to look up the HABARU who were the prehistoric Hebrews. They apparently were intially desert nomads who at criticle times would migrate to urban areas for work, trading,
as passaage to another area. It was Abram who was a semi-settled Habaru from Ur who moved with his flocks and household gods which were also Habaru and maybe Sumerian, Akkadian,or Amorite. However Abram is contacted by an angel who tells him of the conditions for his covenent with God who will protect his decendants. It's an ecclectic religion in the sense of it's roots with the Habauru and Mesopotamia, the the devine intervention by an angel , and later Moses, the Torah, define the basic elements of Judiasm.

Judaism grew out of opposition to the common practices of the cultures of the time --
- against the practice of elevating humans to the status of Gods (Egyptian pharoahs)
- against the practice of human sacrifice
- against the practice of slaves being "owned" by rulers
- against the practice of leaders not being held accountable for their actions
Judaism created laws to provide human rights to the most lowly while at the same time making leaders accountable for their actions.

Moses and the children of Israel brought out of bondage in Egypt.
However, in time it got farther from the truth of God, and was condemned as false religion (i.e. the Pharisees). JESUS is the fulfillment of it and is the Messiah for the entire world, the Jews included.

The word was "YAHUDISM" (there was no "J" until 1400 A.D.) It meant worshipper of YHVH. Abraham was called out of "Babylon" (Ur of the Chaldees) to come apart and worship YHVH truly and accurately. One of "Israel's" children was named "JUDAH" to reflect this true worship. We also are called out of "Babylon"(Churchianity) {Rev. 18} to worship the Almighty YHVH in Spirit and in truth!
