I cannot find the answer to this anywhere. I thought it might be biceps and triceps but I'm not entirely sure?

the muscles I need to know are the main ones responsible. The question I am faced with is 'if you were to throw your arms around someone in an embrace, which pair of muscles would be mainly responsible for the action?'

It is for a stress consultancy course and the booklet it gave as a resource was not very good!

Embrace meaning to hug somebody? Certainly not the triceps, because those are for pushing somebody away from you. ;-)

Generally it's pretty easy to figure out which muscles are used for a given action. Just do the action slowly and feel your arms or legs for which muscles are tensing up. In a hugging action, it feels to me like my biceps primarily (causing the elbows to bend) but also the rear delts (posterior deltoid) and maybe a little on the lats (latissimus dorsi).

loads and loads, it's every contracting / pulling muscle from your fingers to back.

forearms, biceps, deltoids, trapezius and lats. Depending on if you raise you arms.

Triceps and Pectorals also play a stabilising part, with Abdominals and lower back maintain core stability.
