I am looking for a website to get maps and directions for an upcoming trip. I would like to avoid the interstates. Both Yahoo and Mapquest have an "Avoid Highways" option, but it does not seem to work. I live in Roanoke, Va., and going to Pensacola, Fl. U.S. Highway 29, not an interstate, passes about 30 miles to the east of where I live, and ends at Pensacola, which would seem like the most logical route. However, both Yahoo and Mapquest show going over 200 miles west into Tennessee and then south on a series of 3 or 4 interstates.

If there is no known "interstate free" websites, perhaps someone is familiar with my general travel plans. Can I take US 29 all the way, or will I, at some point, have to get on an interstate for at least a few miles? Is US 29 broken up at some point?

A fun trip! You must have seen the movie "Cars". Personally, I prefer a paper road atlas to have beside me in the car. However, I've put some links below that you can use to follow the older US highway system. It does look like 29 goes all the way (the 1st link).

If you know the meaning of the symbol shapes, you'll be able to get just about everywhere without getting on the interstate system.

Have a fun, safe trip.

~~ US 29 merges into an Interstate a bit south of Danville on the Va/NC border and stays that way a short distance.
~~ You know, really you would be most wise to invest in a book-size Rand McNally Atlas.
I have one here that I'm checking for you but it is getting a bit old now and I'm sure the roads have changed.
And it is quite complicated; that is a very built-up area.
Alt 29 seems to disappear at Kannapolis.
I really don't think you will get all the way to Pensacola on the Gulf without using some interstates.

~~ You know it does make travelling most difficult when you want to use alternate roads to the interstates.
I don't know of any websites (other than Mapquest with the "Avoid Highways" option) that can help you.

I travel from Tampa Bay Florida to Virginia without using interstates, but it takes some planning using your GPS Navigator. I haven't found a map website that distinguishes the difference between Interstate Hwys and US hwys. If they say "no Highways" it eliminates 4 lane divided US highways.. And... Interstate hwys. US 29 is one of those good US 4 lane Divided Highways I partially use. Determine which cities 400 miles apart on the map reside on a US Highway (non-Interstate). Use the curser to move my route on the map(s) for each 4-500 mile segment... telling my Navigator to go through a certain (pre programmed) city using the "fastest route'. It takes some work to preprogram your GPS Navigator to recognize cities in your 'favorites', and just choose the new favorite destination as you approach your last destination. I usually add about an hour to a otherwise 8 hour drive via interstate... but it is sooo worth it... I shouldn't even tell you... Stay on the Interstate and enjoy the trucks.

That Sir, is a sexist, blanket fact that is incorrect and presumptuous. many everybody isn't used to utilising maps and on the beginning up, might nicely be puzzled via the main effective thank you to apply one. although, those with adventure and coaching can generally visualize nicely sufficient to maintain the map table certain. mockingly, the "new technologies" of GPS will rotate a map for you as youpersistent, so possibly the "map turners" weren't to this point off the mark interior the 1st place.
