It is something which I have done for many years. The advantages, as I see them, are as follows. (1)The words remain in your head and you can draw on them later on when you want to use them. (2) You can concentrate on pronounciation because you don't have to preoccupy yourself with finding the words. (3) You can practice intonation, which is vital if you are ever going to sound like a native speaker.

Yes, it allows you to sound your words out and make you familiar with the structure of how a sentence can be made. For the first couple of years in schools most students are made to do this.

Of course! With languages, the more practice, the better you become. You just have to make sure you're dedicated enough to fix the mistakes and improve instead of simply ignoring them and being lazy.
