This is such a good question, and I absolutely love the answers so far. Yes, the peacock is edible, and people DO eat peacock. The peacock is a relative of the pheasant, and is considered to be a game bird. In most culinary circles, it's hidden behind the name Peahen or peafowl... It's still a peacock.

Peacock meat and eggs are kosher, too... In case you'd like to give it a try, here's a recipe that calls for peafowl...

I grew up on a cattle ranch in Nevada and my father raised many different birds as a hobby. Pheasants and Peafowl were just two of many breeds. People bought some for pets, but as they have between 4 and six chicks each time they set, we began to have more peacocks and peahens on the ranch than we knew what to do with. My father had the bright idea that we should cook one up. There was very few things that we raised that were safe from the dining table. They are absolutely delicious!! They are not gamey, or at least the peafowl that are raised on grain are not. They taste very much like turkey and have white breast meat and very light almost white leg and thigh meat. We cooked it like you would a turkey and it turned out much juicier than a turkey. As a result we ate quite a few over the years. If you ever have a chance you should try it. I believe there are exotic meat companies on the web that will ship peafowl.

Yes you can eat Peacock. In England it was cooked for aristocracy and Royalty at banquets and was served on a platter with its feathers arranged on it to look pretty. I have never tasted it but i read somewhere that its very gamey or strong flavour. Only aristocrats and Royalty had rights to keep these birds once, as they were an exotic species. So I doubt anyone like us would ever have an oportunity to try it.I think you would have to look up some very old cook books to find out how it was prepared though as its not something that commoners would have for Sunday roast lunch lol!

First of all they are called peafowl. The male is a peacock and the female is a peahen. No, I don't think they are generally eaten.I never considered eating mine.

Yes, people do eat peacock. In New Zealand they are considered pest birds by ranchers. Peacock meat cannot be bought and sold. You must hunt them.
