I live in a relatively busy suburban street, and in the past my family has had a few of our beloved cats run over on the road. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what precautions I can take to prevent this from happening again?
I do try my best to keep him inside at night time, but sometimes he can be very persistent in his desire to go outdoors, and it seems cruel to trap him. I also had a cat that was run over during the day, so it seems it is not only night time roaming that is the problem.
Cheers!

I can understand your kitty's urge to roam, but sometimes what the kitty thinks is best for him, may not be! Cats are going to be cats, they want to get into things, climb, and scratch. After all of that, they generally eat, then sleep alot. Pretty much a cats life.

If you could get your kitty one of those "apartments", they give him the means to climb onto something, they are usually covered in carpeting or other rough material so they cure the urge to scratch, and they have little rooms and tunnels for them to climb into and explore. They are usually treated with catnip, or can be treated with catnip spray.

This ought to keep your kitty satisfied. I know you think it's cruel to keep him indoors, but I think it's a bit more cruel to peel him out from under a car, don't you think?

i wish i could say that if you neuter him he might not cross, but it's not that easy.(or he may already be neutered) the only sure way to stop him is to make him a totally indoor cat. it's not cruel because you may be saving his life. and possibly the lives of others. we were driving down a local road one day, a cat darted in front of our van, we had to either stay on our side of the raod or hit a on coming car. the cat did not survive and we were very upset we had to make this decision. if the road had not been straight but curved we would have blindly avoided the cat and hit the car head on possibly killing us and the other occupant(s)

Probably the best you can do is get a very highly-reflective collar - at least if he's on the road he'll stand a chance of being seen.

Gee, I don't know. Maybe don't let him out at all?

What a concept!
