If I met you on the street and told you that without you knowing anything else about me how would you react? I am just curious what the stigma is

I Should have been more thourough the reason I am asking this is because of the stigma that multiple personalities have had I have had extensive therapy with mine and "we" are co-consious, communicate and cooperate with eachother which makes life workable a year ago I would have not told a soul about this because I was ashamed of it but the truth of it is I am the way I am because of what was done to me as a young child and DID is a remarkable coping mechanism works great when your a kid getting abused not so helpfull as an adult though

I don't think I can speak for other people, but I would probably look at you funny just because you walked up to a total stranger and divulged something that's very personal. Personally, I have a mental health problem but I don't go around telling everyone (yes, I realize the irony of that statement).

I guess if I knew you and you told me, I'd want to know more about it. It wouldn't change the way I would look at you. If anything, it would help me to understand you.

I hope I haven't totally offended you but at least you're able to talk about your disorder. That's a lot better than some people out there!

Its other people who have the stigma as they dont know how to react to mental disorders.. Im shcizophrenic but you wouldnt know unless I told you only one of my friends knows and she is fine with it I only ever had on episode( heard a voice) 5yrs ago i take one tablet a day I hold down 2 jobs raise 2 kids on my own passed my driving test a year ago I dont let it bother me or hold me back and if someone found out I certainly wouldnt be embaressed..

If I knew you personally I would just ask are you coping with it , do you need support I'd be there for you.. If I didnt know you and you just came up to me I wouldnt be shocked by your statement I would ask if you needed some help where you finding it hard to cope that day tke you for a coffee and talk to you...

Half the population have a mental disorder of some sort some you notice thats something isnt quite right but I wouldnt be predujdice toward them..

dont worry what other people think you are the one living and dealing with it not them , exluding family and friends if they know and if they do they should be supporting you... just because you have a disorder doesnt mean you cant lead a normal life...

Depends... If you were nice. I might just say hi or smile. Then be on about my merry way. (Because I probably wouldn't know anything was wrong or that you didn't have it under control.) although I would think it a bit strange that you felt the need to confide in a stranger...

If you were a raving loon, I'd probably stand there and watch for a second and smile (although not for the same reasons) and then offer you a card to the local non profit mental health center and refer you to a few friends of mine. Knowing perfectly well and expecting that 10 seconds after telling me, considering your condition, you probably wouldn't think anything was wrong with you anyway and get either defensive, extremely confused and erratic or violent as a result?

By then, I would be long gone so...

Does that answer your question?

I agree with zzy up there though. Get a second opinion!

I'd advice you to see a second opinion. I believe (and I am by no means even in the minority) that DID/MPD is the result of inappropriately subjective clinicians.

I would look at you funny and hope you had help with it. Most people would look at you and not know what you were talking about.
