My fiancé's family live on a farm in Austria and we have decided to hold our wedding reception in a newly built horse barn. It is very smart inside, but plain and much too large for the number of guests that we are inviting. Do you have any ideas how I can decorate to make it look elegant.

hang white twinkle lights all around the room to give it the shape you want. hang some wedding bells a t each point where you attach the lights. get some bows or make some and put them on the back of each chair. have linen table cloths. for a center piece on the tables, get some round mirrors. put a clear glass vase on the mirrors put some rose petals in the bottom of the vases, fill half full of water. now float a candle on the water. do not light the candles to soon. test one first and find out how long they burn. try and skirt the tables that guests won't be sitting at. find some music to have playing in the background while guests are socializing. twinkle lights behind the skirting of the head table is a great effect. really makes it stand out. good luck, have fun, life is short so live it up!

Is cost an option?

I would get screens, like the ones that are used as room dividers, and use them to make the space smaller. Decorate them with fabric. Swag fabric along the walls, and string fairy lights across the ceiling.

P.S. Regular Christmas lights wrapped in tulle are flammable!

If you are in a barn use lots of natural colors. You can decorate with tree branches, tulle, little white lights, balloons. Spray paint the branches. SOmetimes less is best. Don't overdo.

get some dividers, criss cross ones like you see in the garden, half your space into the eating area and the dance area, it will look a lot more full when you come to sit down for dinner. I went to the local garden centre and filled my marquee with big plants, looked really lovely as we had a mint green theme, use large vases on the tables as centre pieces with flowers and the long wispy grass plant to make it look fuller.

Go to your local florist and rent potted trees. You can string these with twinkle lights and put them in he corners or bare areas. This is the best and least expensive way to fill space.

keep the colours neutral, cream is usually best, try draping material from ceiling to floor to create a "wall" to suit the size of your party, different and elegant, not to harsh, works everytime, hope you have a good big day x

as its in a barn i would use lots of natural things, lots of drapped white muslin and plenty of flowers and ivy wrapped around everywhere, hops look good too, anything from nature, wood, stone, you could use pine cones, it could look really stunning and not cost too much either, and fun to collect it all, use wild flowers (so much prettier) maybe gingham table cloths, bring that country theme in, good luck x
