I have a roommate that has been cooking something in a crock-pot for over 5 days now. I remember my mother using one when I was a kid but it was rarely for 12 hours or more. I'm just nervous of a fire hazard and of course the smell of this thing cooking 24/7 has the whole house smelling like this and I'm sure it's going to drive any rodents crazy to get into the house to find out where this smell is coming from. I'd ask her outright but she's not a very easy person to deal with. I just thought I'd get some feedback to see if my worries are valid or not. Thanks! Jamie

Its not a stupid question. Perhaps you can ask her to make something else that does not take 5 days to cook. I wouldn't eat that if it took that long...worms could develop in there. yuck.
Personally...I have never cook anything like that long with crock pot...never.
Good luck! =)

When I make black beans ... it is a stove top process that takes 3 days to cook.

I also have a high tech fuzzy logic rice cooker that keeps rice good (and ready) for days and days.

But 5 days in a crock pot seems excessive even for me.

Does she at least "tend" it every so often checking whether it is "drying" out or needs a stir?

When I was in college I had this crazy suite mate that locked himself in the bathroom for over an hour at a time (4 of us shared a single bathroom) and made and consumed 3-5 packets of instant oatmeal or 2-3 boxes of mac and cheese in a little electric kettle while in there.

Just let a few crazed rodents into the house, perhaps she will take the hint. Good luck!

This person has to be nuts.
There is nothing but nothing that requires that amount of cooking with the possible exception of cannibalism.(Have you just replaced a previous room-mate?)One question for you:
Who is paying the gas/electricity bill for this pantomime?

Ask her if she has health insurance. Anyone eating from that evil brew is going to get sick. Hope you can find a nicer roommate soon.

I can't think of any reason to have it going that long.
