2 ways, push it from the bottom with a hydraulic pump and telescopic piston. Good for 3-4 floors only.

2 way: pull it up with a cable, and use a counterweight to balance the weight of the elevator.

Modern elevators have automatic brake systems, emergency lights, phone, videocameras, music, emergency cables (normally 3 cables for pulling and 2 cables more for security), computer floor position, door sensors, floor sensors, weight sensor (too much weight and it will not start), oscillation sensors (stopping and braking it in case of earthquakes)

you see they are quite technological devices.
