The Power itself it not hazardous. The industrial wastes left by the fuels used to heat water to run the turbines are radioactive and have a life of several thousand years. Because it has to be managed so rigorously, people tend to fear it - with just cause (3 mile island [near miss] and Chernobyl [thousands of deaths])

The advantage of Nuclear power is that it is clean to generate (with regard to generating Greenhouse Gases).

It can be very unforgiving of accidents - an accident at a conventional power station might cause black outs, and perhaps even an explosion, but it would be fairly local in its effect. A melt down, if uncontained, could spread radioactive debris over a huge area.

Whilst I don't every think all eggs should be in one location atomic energy does have a plave in our energy needs. My personal hope is to reduce consumption and go towards better generation (less political & less dirty) to remove and replace the old ones.

Possibility of radioactive release. Technology has made plants safer, but disposal of waste is still a problem. I still wouldn't want to live any where near one. Human error and substandard engineering/construction accounts for most accidents.
