Yes, I am the middle child. Out of the six kids I was treated the most different. I feel ya...it just makes me a stronger person. When I have children I will try my best not to single any of them out or treat them different. I guess there has to be some good out of the bad :)

I'm a middle child and proud of it!!
I got to have a playmate when my sister and I were of playing age, and when she got too old my brother was just old enough; so I always had a playmate and may have been closer to each of them than either of them is to the other - not sure, though.
I have a strong, independent, personality with a hint of "attitude" as a result of taking a backseat to everyone else; and I learned social skills and some leadership skills by looking to be a "star" among my friends rather than within my family.
I've "been there" for my parents when they were alive and when my older sister was too busy with her own life and my brother was too young; so I have the feeling that I've at times been some form of a center of gravity as well as middle child.
I was neither the center of attention because of being Number1 (God knows, I've never been Number 1 :) ), nor the center of attention because of being the "baby" or the only boy; and I always liked it that way.
First-borns tend to be happy enough to want to please their parents. Middle-borns tend to be just that little bit unhappy enough not to care as much about pleasing parents; and, as a result, I lived up to my middle-child status by rocking the boat fairly often.
I "raised myself" and did a good job of it!! :)
....and yet, I did everything I could to try to make each of my own three children feel like they were "only children" because I do know that when children are little and feel like a "middle child" it isn't always the best thing.

I wasn't but my dad was.
In his sixties he went back to college to get his psychology degree. He never cared much for movies but he had to watch ET, which was just out at the time. His critique, which was very different than anyone else in his class, and took the professor completely by surprise was - MIDDLE CHILD!
The older child ran the pack of kids, and the younger daughter was the parents favorite ... but the middle kid gets basically ignored by everyone throughout the film, although he's the one who really "gets" what is really going on.
ET may be a little long in the tooth ... but give it another look and pay attention if you don't see yourself in the place of the middle kid in the film.

My sister was not treated differently and she was the middle child, its different in every situation. Its a bit of a cop out for people to simply say " the middle child is treated differently" every parent is different. The sympathy should not perticularly flow towards the middle child, they are no harder treated (in general) than others.

I was a middle child in a family of 6 kids and I had 5 of my own. But I always tried to make the middle kids feel as welcome and loved as the rest because I knew how sad it made me to be lost in the middle.

I am.
Guess I was treated differently.
The older one is always the first, so allowed off with all sorts.
The younger one is always the Baby, so allowed off with anything he does.
But now they are both coke head alcoholics who can't hold a job or a woman. I'm off to phone Jeremy Kyle
