Hi June...it's important to determine the cause of the constipation aside from treating it as this could represent a more serious medical complication. It could be something as simple as a hairball causing the constipation or something more critical such as megacolon ... left untreated this can become life-threatening. Treatments used for constipation in felines can be adding a little oil to supplement the diet, fibre supplements such as Metamucil®, canned pumpkin (not the canned pie mix, but plain pumpkin http://www.petcaretips.net/constipation_cats.html ), etc.

Your vet can give you a gentle laxative for her (such as Katalax, which is a pleasant tasting paste). More importantly, the vet can check to make sure there is no underlying cause that needs to be treated. Constipation can be caused by too dry a diet, or hairballs, both of which can be easily tackled by a change of diet. But constipation can also be a sign of kidney problems or diabetes, especailly in older cats, and you need a vet to rule these out.
