Captain Titus Oats on the Scott expedition to the South Pole.
He was in the tent with the others and knew that he was not going to make it as he was already ill / frost bitten and would be a liability to the others. So he said those words and left the tent to give the others a chance.

Captain Oates, one of the group of Antarctic explorers under the command of Captain Robert Scott in about 1912. They all died on their way back from the Pole. (Admunsen had beaten them to be first to the Pole).
Captain Oates, left the tent, saying those famous words. Some think he committed suicide for the sake of the group, to extend their food etc.

It was Captain Oates, not Scott. He was one fo the members of Scott's expedition to the South Pole.
P.S. Nice bit of editing by GoreyAlan at the top - it used to say Captain Scott!

Lieutenant Oates, and the quote is 'I'm just going outside, I may be some time.' I used it myself once when I got laid off in the day from my job and gathered all my stuff up.
