You're right, it's scandalous! It's just the same when I buy sugar free coke, not only is there no sugar in it but I have to pay for it.

Pay for free, I get it. But seriously, I stopped buying regular eggs about 8 or 10 years ago. Free range eggs usually have no hormones, antibiotics or stimulants added to the chicken feed. As a result, I noticed that I've had a dramatic decrease in headaches verses before when I ate the regular eggs. Now I can eat a dozen eggs in one day and not experience any discomfort. It does make a difference.

Because it's far cheaper to rear hens in tiny little boxes where they can barely move and don't get to see day night and live miserable lives just so that we can eat cheap eggs. Free range means that they are reared in barns and outside and live more natural lives and are happier, (which incurs a lot more overhead costs) although still be careful as some manufacturers claim free range but squash hundreds of hens into tiny barns. Read the boxes to make sure that the hens have been raised well on a good diet and NEVER EVER buy battery farmed eggs as battery farms are evil. Free range organic eggs taste best anyway, if you are UK based try Clarence Court Old Cotswold Legbar eggs as they taste fantastic and the hens lead normal lives.

free range eggs don't mean the eggs to be free
it simply means that the chickens roamed free
rather than couped up in a place all the time.
free range eggs are healthier for you. They cost a little more than other eggs that are from chickens that don't get any freedom. Would U like to be kept in a stall all your life? I bet not.
So I suggest support the farmers that raise
chickens humanely letting them roam free on their farm! Your stomach will like U better for doing that too! Also consider all the chemicals and dyes used in sheltered chickens. I know one farm.. that feed their sheltered chickens pig guts and U know pigs eat anything! Another feed their sheltered chickens fish.. needless to say those eggs tasted fishy!
Also watch out from some companies that label their eggs free range when they aren't.
Most people don't bother to write to food companies to ask if their product is truly as they
say it is. They have to say the truth in letter more so that on the packages!

Free ranging means the chicken reared in a open area unlike in a cage as done in other places. This is more animal friendly but costly. Hence, we also pay more

Because free range means they are FREE to RANGE about, as opposed to having their wings and legs cut off and stuck into a cage just large enough for their torso.
A thought - do you refuse to pay road tolls because you've already paid your Road Tax?

ordinary eggs as opposed to free range means that the birds were probably all stuck in a small cage when they were laying their eggs which inevitable means the farmer doesnt have to pay for a huge space of land for them to roam about WHEREAS when they lay eggs in a less confined space its more costly so your basically paying for the chickens to have been allowed to roam about - more animal friendly

Because the 'free' refers to the fact that the hens range freely around, not to the price!

You get them from the FREE chickens. The ones that run around free not the ones that are in a heated shed.
