Depends on what he uses - narcotics work differently than Ibuprofen which works differently than asprin, etc. etc. Usually, anything that's gonna make a difference if he suffers combat-related wounds, i.e. getting shot, is going to GET him shot because it makes your head fuzzy and prevents you from thinking as clearly and sharply as you need to be. Mind you, it worked great for the Vikings to have a tankard of ale before going into battle, but that was back when you could survive a hit from the other guy's weapon, and being drunk made didn't make that big of a difference in your combat performance. Doesn't work so hot when you're dealing with firearms. Anything else really isn't going to help with that level of pain and is a waste of medication since it gives your body a chance to get used to the painkillers which makes it harder to get rid of headaches and the like. Oh yeah, if he takes a painkiller that works by thinning the blood, i.e. asprin, he'll bleed out that much quicker if he DOES get shot. Anti-coagulants are BAD for soldiers in combat.

Depends on the pain killer and the dosage.
Some pain killers act as vasal dilaters and improve circulation to the eyes which lets you see a little better.

At my age, a little Tylenol before putting on Body Armor is not a bad thing. Also, taking a little Tylenol after coming out of my body Armor is not a bad thing.

He feels no pain, but he won't get any gain.
What happens when you ask a daft question?
Do you feel philosophical, or just dumb?
Are you on painkillers or crack?
I hope for your sake it's painkillers, I'm gonna kick your ***

Quite possible they lose focus of a very dangerous environment & increase their chances of being wounded or killed.
If their negligence causes injury or death of another they could be court martialed.
