This may be correct. Withholdings are based upon your wages and how many exemptions you claim on your W4. If he's filing as Head of Household with 2 dependents, he doesn't have ANY tax liability until his income hits $17,450. If he made that or less, little or no tax would be withheld from his pay.

He may also be eligible for the Earned Income Tax Credit. If he's eligible for that it would be several thousand dollars based on his child alone if his income was around $17,450. And if your duaghter is also his child the EITC would be even higher.

Without knowing ALL of the facts and figures in your situation it's not possible to say exactly if you have anything to worry about though unless his income is fairly high -- around $30,000 or so -- there's probably nothing to worry about.

what do you mean by "just got his tax return and federal taxes withheld was only $15?" he should have received a form W-2 from his employer showing total taxable wages and taxes withheld. if this is what you meant, then yes, it seems like a mistake. if they were prepared manually then maybe its the employer's fault. usually payroll companies like Paychex, etc. would not make a mistake like this. tell your fiance to visit the HR dept or whoever is in charge of payroll at work and discuss this before preparing your tax return.

if there is a mistake on the W-2, the employer/payroll company MUST issue a corrected one. you can technically use his last paystub of the year to figure out total wages and taxes, but if the W-2 is wrong, then that means the IRS has a copy of an incorrect W-2. so if you report different amounts on your tax return than what the existing W-2 has, the IRS will send you a tax notice before issuing any refund. so its important that he receive a corrected W-2 before filing his taxes.

by the way, your fiance is NOT entitled to claim your daughter as a dependent b/c she is not his qualified child, nor his qualified relative. she is YOUR qualified child, even though your fiance may provide a home and all of her support.

Do you have his pay stubs. His pays stubs should have the amount of federal taxes taken out for each pay period. See if it total more then 15 dollars? If it does then you know it's a mistake and you can call his employer for a correction. If the company insists it the correct amount even though the pay stubs say different they you need to gather all the pay stubs and take them with you when you do your taxes.
Can't tell you what your tax returns will be because I don't know what your income bracket is or what all your deductions will be. Your tax agent will be able to help you with that.

His withholding is figured based on the W-4 form that he filled out. It may be correct given the number of dependents he has taken on his W-4. If he is not going to owe taxes based on his income, then little or no withholding is correct.

Any refund he get will be from credits such as the Earned Income Credit or Child Tax Credit.

If your fiance is not related to your daughter he cannot take her as a dependent on his tax return.

Did he get his tax return or was it is W-4? If you believe there has been a mistake on his W-4 just take a look at his last pay stub for 2006. Contact his employer immediately and let them know that you believe a mistake has been made.
