The previous answers are all partially correct. For the bulk of the pregnancy, all of baby's wastes are filtered from the fetus' blood and into mom's bloodstream through the placenta. It's a reverse of the way they get nourishment. However, toward the end of pregnancy, baby begins swallowing and 'urinating' out the amniotic fluid to practice digestion. This process causes the fetus to digest his/her own skin cells that have sloughed off in utero. That particular waste, is pushed into the bowel as meconium. Most babies do NOT pass this meconium before birth, but a few do. If they do, and 'inhale' or swallow it, they can have life threatening complications. The chances of this happening are prettty slim, but are increased if the mother takes stimulant laxatives, like Castor Oil, that can also stimulate the baby's bowel.

No the baby doesn't produce poo until after the birth, sometime during labour the baby may become distressed and in the waters surrounding the babies Marconi (babies first poo) may be present.

The baby is not supposed to poo before birth. Sometimes it happens near the end of pregnancy and it is dangerous because the baby can swallow and choke on the stuff.

The baby does not necessarily "poo"" the baby's waste are filtered into the mother for elimination. Most babies do not have a bowel movement until after birth, but some babies do have their first bowel movement (merconium)
as they are being born or a little prior to it.

No, the baby only does a poo when he/she is born, and thats normally called meconium and is a black/green tar-like consistency...nice!!

Although saying that, sometimes when babies are in distress when in labor, they can sometimes swallow meconium, so maybe they just start to be able to when the mum goes into labor, if you are pregnant and want to know, just ask your doctor/midwife.
