Political corerctness gone mad. It's now racist to call it the former. Some people have too much time on their hands if that becomes an issue. Problem is, they work in politics!

EDIT: Whiteboards are still called whiteboards though. ooohh, I'm SOOO offended! <>

Hello,

This forum fels like it needs an Englishman to bring order...

I'm sure this could well be the case in America that it is not considered PC but frankly I find renaming them chalkboards a little racist. In such an action surely we are saying that the black community are unable to accept the existence of an adjective..? I'm sure that's not the case and I think the whole thing is ridiculous.

On a sparate note, has anyone considered that they might have just done it because some blackboards (as they are still called on this side of the ocean) are sometimes green? so to call them black would be a misnomer. Also, 'black' coffee is actually dark brown... maybe this is the reaon?

Why not? it is equally descriptive. (and - as Jassays points out, above - some 'blackboards' are green)

Anyway, I hear them called blackboards all the time (although, I admit, I haven't been to a school for a while) - the shiny white boards are called - surprise, surprise - white boards.

'Black', is a valid description for something which is black

Just a piece of advice to all you 'daily mail reader' types who instantly got on you high horses about "{splutter} It's political correctness gone mad !!!!!!!!!!!"
get over yourselves. Take off the tin-foil hats, once in a while.

I don't think you can blame this on being PC. We were calling it a "chalkboard" 30 years ago, way before anything PC was taken into consideration. Maybe it's just what has caught on. I was raised in the southern USA (Atlanta area) and everyone there called it a chalkboard. Maybe because most of them were green, not black?

Because some idiots have nothing better to do than find excuses to shout racist rubbish, I am pretty sure that no BLACK person ( am I allowed to say that ? ) has ever been offended by a board that is used to write on, the written words maybe ? . It is getting paranoid that we must not say any thing that resembles a colour, a religion, a group, a sex, or what ever, we will soon be banned from saying anything at all.

Not to do with PC- to do with the fact people use white marker boards nowadays, so 'chalk' to what defines it (because it would be what you'd have to put in your pocket).
Also, many chalkboards are green (especially in maths and science) not black.

Because calling it a Blackboard is now classed as not politically correct as it is distinguishing black from white.

Oh incidentally on a similar subject, you are not supposed to call a manhole cover that anymore it has to be a hole cover now so it doesnt offend women illegidly. Political correctness has totally gone mad nowadays - Whatever happened to freedom of speech?

What about smart boards (interactive whiteboards)? Will that offend less intelligent people? The world is going crazy!

Correct or not it will always be a BLACKboard to me, I shall sing my grandchildren Baa Baa BLACK sheep and should the children want a Golliwog soft toy than I shall buy them one. I am sick to death of being told what I can and cant do in my home country. The thing is the majority of black people have no problem with it because none of it is racist - it the PC crowd in Parliament !!!!!!!!!!!!

I heard this was a racial issue - apprently hcalling it a black board and then putting white over it showed white supremacy. the funny thing is dry markerboards can no longer be called white boards because if you write on them in black - then you have a lot of white a and a little balck which shows...wait for it...white supremacy!!

Isn't it odd how white people always get made out as the racists what ever way you play it out!
