how can i convert the .lit files used by MIcrosoft Reader so that they can be run on MS Word?

I just downloaded a few e-books from demanoid. They're all in '.lit' format, which is for Microsoft Reader. Now, plese suggest to convert .lit to word format or pdf or better still, an alternative program available for free download that can read these files. thanks!
