To all who answered with the "Congressional Medal of Honor" you didn't read the question fully. An individual service does not award the CMH, it can only recommend that it be awarded. Congress actually awards that medal.

The highest medal given by the U.S. Army is the "Distinguished Service Cross". This medal is one step below the CMH and is given for conspicuous and gallant action in the face of an enemy, but where justification of recommendaton of the Medal of Honor is not substantiated.

The Congressional Medal of Honor DOES have Army, Navy and Air Force designations, the face of the medal is slightly different for each service. The Marines that are awarded the Medal of Honor are awarded the Navy Design of that medal.

"Congressional Medal of Honor" - Awarded by Congress and presented by the President after recommendation from the Chief of Staff of the U.S. Army, Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force, Chief of Naval Operations or The Commandant of the Marine Corps.

Distinguish Service Cross- U.S. Army, U.S. Air Force
Navy Cross- U.S. Navy, United States Marine Corps

The Congressional Medal of Honor is the highest award for any service member. It was enacted in 1861 and has been awarded to more than 3400 service members. The list of recipients is too lengthy for this forum, but I have included a link to an Army site which breaks it down by wars where the awards were presented. Hope this helps.

Medal of Honor. (Congress awards it, but "Congressional" is not an official part of the name but often added to differentiate it from other Medals of Honor, such as the "Law Enforcement and Firefighting Medal of Honor.") During the civil war it was the only medal the USA had so anyone who did anything of note got it. Most commonly for capturing the enemy's flag or preventing the enemy from capturing ours. Now the criteria to get one are very high, usually involving death.

Medal of Honor, which has been given to many soldiers, mostly who gave up their lives for others & who were awarded the medal after their deaths. As for the US military, Audie Murphy, actor in "To Hell and Back" was the most decorated soldier in American history. That movie was the story of his life, and I highly recommend you watching it. He also won the MOH.
