People began calling this a throw away society in the 80s.....when was the last time you saw a soft drink bottle returnable for deposit & refilled?

The last 10 years have brought significant reduction in some types of trash. Most notably plastics & paper. More commitment is still desparately needed.

Effective recycling is still a few years off in many communities, while others have difficulty with compliance.

Less packaging used to market products would help, but then the marketers know what we buy, & that's usually a nice package!!

yes the problem is cost related. for a company time wise it is cheaper to replace then to repair or rebuild. People have the same problem on a smaller scale. ie: tv breaks $125 to fix or replace for $125???

The second part of the problem is the landfills. Go visit one sometime. Most only use voluntary recycling at the landfill.
Only thing I can think of is the trash needs to be dumped on long conveyers and the re-cyclables need to be pulled. reducing the trash by around 70% that get buried in the landfill.

Yes, I entirely agree. However, I think people try to ignore things like that by pointing the fingers at things that are smaller in numbers, like smokers.
