I am 5'9 and weigh around 250lbs. About a year and a half ago I hurt my back and spent 6 months lying flat as I couldn't even sit up for more than a few minutes. During that time I put a lot of weight on (about 5 or 6 stone) I'm currently waiting on surgery, but in the meantime I am really aware that my weight is not good for my back. I started aggressivly dieting about 6 months ago and dropped about 25lbs in a couple of months, but have stopped losing wieght now. I quiet simply can't exercise any more than I do at the moment - I usually manage a 1/2 walk with my dog every day, but still have to spend quiet a lot of time flat.
I eat between 1000 and 1300 calories a day, low GI foods but just don't seem able to lose any more weight. Once I have the surgery I should be able to exercise a lot more, but I want to try and lose more weight before the surgery - any ideas?

Hello,

(ANS) I watched a fascinating TV program last night on BBC2 called the "trueth about food" it was all about weight loss. There were several incredible points made in the program. In summary:-

a) Fatter people actually have HIGHER metabolic rates than skinny people. (the metabolism mythe) "Oh!! its my metabolism?? wrong plain and simple. How fat you are depends entirely on how much you consume and nothing else.

b) A diet which is high in diary products contains high calcium levels, high calcium means the body excetes (gets rid of) more fat. So a diet high in calcium i.e.dairy products is helpful when slimming.

c) High protein foods make us feel more satisfied and fuller for longer so we eat less often as a result.

d) The form in which foods are eaten in important, soups tended to help the body feel fuller for longer. Than the same solid foods in non liquid form.

e) Portion size of a meal is vital, as the TV program showed the more you give people the more they will consume. So watching portion sizes in vital in any weight loss program.

**Personally its my opinion that you have to exercise as well as eat smaller portions, and eat the right types of foods. Otherwise you are not going to burn up the calories which the body has stored as fat.

Losing weight is very simple but very hard to do. It's simple math, burn more calories than you consume. Cut down on your calories and expend more energy. You are mobile now, so look for exercises that have no impact on your back. Swimming would be an excellent aerobic and toning exercise - could you get to a pool a few days a week. Are there exercises you could do sitting down. How about an exercise bike - that puts no pressure on your back but is excellent for burning calories. Consult your doctor - I am sure they would be delighted to hear you are trying to get into shape before surgery. I'm sure it is hard to cut down on calories (especially if you can't get around much) you must be bored. Try to find interests that keep you busy and keep your mind off food. Distraction is a wonderful thing. Good luck!

eat mostly veggies and fruit....you really have to watch your high fat proteins and simple carbs.
Instead of cooking with fat use olive oil and try to find alternative sources of protein that are better for you like seeds, hemp and soy.
And you should definitely definitely go see a physiotherapist...they will give you exercises to improve your back and that wont hurt it. It will be good before and after surgery since you will always be able to use these exercises forever. I hurt my back too and 3 days of physio i wasnt in pain anymore. It will help.
If your gonna have some candy try to make it something healthier.

Figure out what sort of exercise you're going to do, where you're going to do it, and when you're going to do it, and create a schedule you can follow. It's important to do this before you start, If you like to use exercise equipment and you don't want to buy any, you're going to need access to a gym. If you want to run or bicycle, you need to figure out how to do that without hurting yourself. Sort it all out ahead of time and it'll be a lot easier when you're actually working out. If you want to lose two pounds per week, I recommend that you do exercise that will burn 500 calories every day (in addition to reducing your caloric intake by 500 calories per day; see Eat Less). If you want to lose one pound, you do 250 calories worth of exercise per day (and eat less).

Anyway I do wish you good luck!!!!!!!!
