i.e.

= A1 - A2

SUM tells excel to expect a calculation, i.e. add subtract, divide, multiply or resolve a formula.


So subtract would be sum(b12-b10) i.e subtract the sum in b10 from the sum in b12

To subtract the sum of 2 columns would be

SUM((b12:b24)-(c12:c24))

That formula would subtract the total of cells c12 to c24 from the total of b12 to b24

'-' is the subtract sign, as the other answers mention do =sum(a1-b1)
