Doesn't sound like a very merciful God if you go to hell forever if you make him angry. Sometime it feels some people become Christians more out of fear of this than out of love for Jesus or whatever it is. What do you think?

Yeah... yeah, it does. Here's one of my favorites:

"Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man -- living in the sky -- who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time! But....... He loves you."

Shoot. God doesn't send us to hell if we make Him angry. Heck, we would all have been there a long time ago if that was the case. As human beings, we are stupid. We do stupid things. We lie, steal, cheat, kill, connive, rape, commit adultery, abuse, etc. Then we say to God, "if you loved us, then why do you allow these bad things to happen to us?". What - is He supposed to run around the earth every millisecond to stop someone every time they do something stupid and bad? No - He has better things to do. Like allow us to make our own choices, and then help us to grow as the people He intended us to be, or watch us suffer the consequences of our foolish choices so that again, we can learn and hopefully grow as a result. Sometimes He lets the innocent suffer, and again there is a reason, which is often not understood until much later, but there is always a reason.

God doesn't send us to hell when He is angry with us. God is a loving God. His Word says that he would rather that none would perish. He wishes we could ALL be in Heaven. He give us the choice - He doesn't force us to love and obey Him. He IS a merciful God because He allows us to sin and sin continuously, and reject Him repeatedly, without taking us out of this world, because He keeps giving us second and third and fourth chances and so on in order to see if perhaps SOME day, we would get it through our thick skulls that He loves us and wants to have a relationship with us, and all we have to do is to simply take the gift He gave us when He allowed His Son to pay for our sins. We don't go to hell for making God angry. Our punishment has already been paid for by Jesus Christ. We go to hell when we refuse to accept this gift and say to God, "I know you want to take the punishment for me, but I don't need or want you God, so I will take the punishment myself". When we reject Christ and the gift He gave us, we are saying to God that we are ready and willing to take that next train down south.

I can tell you that 100 percent of the religious Christians that I have known (and I am not one) are Christian because of either a) a love of whatever their concept of Jesus is, or b) a strong desire to be on a path that they feel is righteous.

I am not saying that fear of percieved punishment has no place in it - I am saying that if it is there is is not a major reason why they became Christian or stay Christian.

There certainly may be people like you describe out there - but they aren't the ones that I know.

Again - I am saying this as someone who does not share these beliefs - just being fair from my experience, cause I don't like stereotyping people.

If anyone who reads the Bible periodically here remembers the passages when they answer questions, then they would know that God is not only loving, and will do anything to help you, but he is full of wrath, the fire and brimstone, turning people to salt, destroying cities, at one point, supposedly drowning everyone on the planet because of their sins but for Moses, his wife and a few of his children.

The way Christians say unbelievers will go to hell does not phase me in the least, over time, I have learnt to block out a lot of the insults they say; by rights, just by telling someone else they are gong to hell, means they themselves are judging you without right and committing a sin, meaning they will also go to hell. A nice little consolation prize, i think.

Unbelievers condemn themselves. If we didn't say anything then it would be like we just sat and watched a baby heading out onto a busy highway while we did nothing. We all have free will but we are still held accountable if we hear the truth and turn away from it.

I think the Holy Spirit guides all true believers. God is just and everyone is free to make a choice. Simple as that. You're either for Him or you're against Him. He will repay in kind.

The Almighty YHVH created this world very good. Once man sinned, he could no longer meet the requirements of YHVH. Because of His great love for man, He send His son the Savior. The Savior's name means YHVH is my Savior!--YAHOSHUA! The only way one can have his sins taken care of is to invite the Savior in to carry them. If a person chooses to remain attached to their sins, they will be consumed in the cleansing fire the Almighty will send to cleanse this world so He can make it new! How could the Almighty be more generous?
