and then it goes away (either eye)? What is this? I don't have insurance...Is it serious?

If it really worries you, you can go see a doctor, but that sounds like an "aura" to me, which is most often followed by a headache. If that's what it is, then no, it's not serious.

Hmmm...the only time this happened to me, I only got a very mild headache. I just double-checked the link I posted, and according to the first paragraph, it can happen without being accompanied by a headache. If you scroll down, there is an illustration that looks a lot like what you described too.

I have the same thing. It starts small and grows until it covers the entire visual field. There is no pain but often I will have an upset stomach afterwards. My doctor said it was a type of migraine. It used to scare me but now I just let it wear itself out.
