The people are a joy...nothing like the boring, stuffy stereotypes. The grand plaza is spectular and the little streets leading from it are full of wonderful cafes and shops.

But the best thing, is the fantastic beer they have over there...without doubt the best beer in the world

I found I was able to speak in several languages, French, English, etc. The country is split into different regions which speak different languages, Brussels will contain a mix of people. I speak French and English plus a little Dutch and German, so it helped me to practise.

The people are much more friendly to outsiders, than other major cities, especially Paris, where many won't speak English on principle.

I enjoyed eating outdoors around the main city square, which is a beautiful place. We did this in October, I think.

Three's a wonderful 1950's building called The Atomium - it represents the atom, built at a time when scientific advances were gaining massive momentum. It was built for a major exhibition, but is now a unique tourist attraction-see link below. It's reasonably priced to visit too, otherwise great for taking photo's outside.

The Belgian beers are a source of pride. There are hundreds, with each local area having its own speciality. You'll almost always get it served in its own label glass. Better than British pubs where you get beer slopped into some filthy chipped vessel, without any sense of pride in how it should be served. Belgian beers are also wonderful - I think the best in the world! Enjoy.

Talking of which, bars and other nightlife is great too. Food is good and varied, perhaps helped from it being home to the European Parliament. Lastly, if you want variety, you can catch a train to some fantastic places - Ghent or Bruge are well worth a visit and different in style to Brussels - much smaller. Or, get a train to Amsterdam, Paris and elsewhere to easily explore a new country. A couple of hours gets you to many places and is affordable.

Brussels is an interesting and very attractive city.

It has an exceptionally well-preserved medieval square, plus statuary, broad avenues, good shopping and good food.

Most of the inhabitants I met were Flemish and spoke English. If you can, take a bus tour. You'll see more, and give yourself time to go back and see the points of interest you liked and would like to see more of.
