My girlfriend and I have been dating for about four years, and we have been having sex for about three years now…
We have always used condoms + the pull out method for birth control (both methods used together)… and everything seemed fine…

However, now that we are getting married this month, this method does not seem to be right anymore. We do not want to have kids now – at least for the next two years… and I do not want to use a condom anymore – at least not always…

She on the other hand does not want to go on the pill coz she claims that it will make her fat and that she has relatives who took it and it ruined their hormone levels…

First of all, is it true that birth control pills make the girl fat? Please explain.

Second, what birth control method should we use?

Note: her cycles are irregular so it's useless to count…

It is true that some women gain a little weight from taking birth control pills. Usually it is only a couple pounds. The good news is that if she goes on birth control pills (or shots, or nuva ring) it will regulate her cycle.

I suggest that she speaks to her doctor. If she still doesn't want to do the pill, she can have an IUD put in, or get a diaphragm/cervical cap.

For over the counter options, there is the Today Sponge, but it can be costly, as well as the female condom. I would not recommend spermicidal foam or jelly because it has a low rate of effectiveness.

I'm on it, and have been on it since grade 8, for acne problems. It most definitely helped me in quite a few ways. For example, I never when through the hating my parents stage, because it evened out my hormones quite a bit. I'm 23 now. Over the years, I had a few problems. For one, the pill that I was on was for acne, and when I started getting lots of non-birth control related health problems, they decided the pill had too much of some chemical that can cause blood clots in it, and with my health stuff they didn't want to take any more risks, so I switched pills. Some gave me much more acne, some made me absolutely psycho, but I'm on one now that I love (Yasmin). A couple things you should note: each pill is different and will effect people differently. Talk to your doctor about what's best for you, and make sure you tell her about any history in your family of blood clots or anything of the sort. Another thing, every so often you'll hear in the news about some pill that caused blood clots that's "being looked into". My doctor told me that the risk of clots is always there, and that person just happened to get them, and then the family is making a big thing in the news about it because they got scared. Though you should always keep that in mind, don't let the news reports scare you. There are other options too. There's the birth control patch, there's an IUD (I think that's what it's called), diaphrams, etc. Talk to your doctor about it. What the pill does is tricks your body into thinking your pregnant, so it sort of gets ready for that. I would personally stay away from the ones that give you your period every four months. That just seems super un-natural to me. Congratulations!

Have her talk to her doctor to determine the best method for you. I have taken the pill for years without a problem. There are also a bunch of different pills out there with different side effects. There is also the shot, the ring, the patch...and a myriad of other forms of birth control available.

I would suggest an IUD. I use Mirena. It stays in for 5 years and the hormones dont get into the blood. On top of that, you dont really have to do anything once you get it. Then, if you want to have kids she can simply go to the doctor and get it taken out. It might even help regulate her periods too.

oral, anal..

anyway I digress. Vasectomy, they are reversible (although it does piss off the doctor if you do come back two years later to have it undone).

My wife took the pill for the first 6 years we were married, she did not get fat as a result of the Pill, but I do think that some of her migraines are a result of the Pill. The problem w/ any chemical drug is that there will be side effects..

it makes you gain weight but not all that much, maybe ten pounds, birth control pills are the only safe way and it will regulate her periods as well, or she could use the shots, but they are safe. much lower doses of hormones than the ones in my day.
