I have a decent consumer grade digital camera. I want to take professional quality pictures and I wanted to know is it more important to have a higher end camera or photo editing software?

The photos I will be taking will mostly be of people in different settings and lighting. I want to achieve that professional look with my photos. I am aware that part of quality photos is lighting and with that being considered could I make very nice professional looking photos with a decent consumer grade digital camera and quality editing software? Or should I spend the money on a high end camera and/or decent photo editing software?

I am not a professional photographer but I find myself more and more having show higher quality pictures for work and pleasure. Mainly I would be taking pictures of rooms and stills of people and some stationary objects.

Can anyone give me some advice and some options I may want to take?

Thanks

Get photoshop.... it is unmisable for photographers these days.
It can make up for some of the bad things in your photos, like the levels, the saturation, the format etc.

Well it looks better quality then a myspace photo but professional quality no sorry. Its a real nice photo though and has good colors and contrast but a pro. would take more care to not have such bright light on the face and shirt and to make sure the eyes were the focus and in this picture all I see is hair!!
