I believe he was addressing the hypocrisy in the church at that time. The bible suggest christ was a good, moral man, filled with love and peace. Most christians tend to act completely differently.

"mean" dear heart, not "meen."
What it meant was that he thought that to become Christian meant become "exactly like Christ." This is not true. We are to become Christ-like, but none of us are EVER going to stop sinning in this life. As we grow and walk with the Lord we will sin less, but not stop altogether. If we could stop sinning, we wouldn't need the Savior. He should have judged Christ based on Christ.
Many, many terrible sins have been committed by church members and even by Christians. Gandhi judged the Savior based on the actions of his followers, and that is a mistake. Are you going to make the same one?

He meant that the theory is fine but the practice, or in this case practitioners, rarely match up to what is expected of them.
Simarlarly, when asked what he thought of Western Civilisation, he is supposed to have replied that he thought it would be a good idea!

Jesus Christ was a cool man, he was nice and compassionate. He wasn't violent and he was an okay dude. But christians these days are full of hatred and ego, that was not what your Jesus Christ wanted.

he meant he likes christ and everything he stood, just not the people who follow him(probably because he thinks they aren't following the true words of the bible like jesus did)
