"The god of the old testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction.: Jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control freak: a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomeniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully. He then put on the face of gentle Jesus meek and mild"

the old testament is a book of history and it is interesting to read how the world began and how the laws were written. Even though we do live under the new laws of the New Testament, the old testament is setting examples of how people lived and were punished and yes their were animal sacrifices, but, when Jesus was born, He was the final sacrifice, The old testament contains thousands of promises to God's children (then and now). It is also valuable because we can plainly see how much better off we are today than the people were in the old testament. A lot of history, promises, and examples of how God's children should live. Certain denominations do live only by the new testament but they are truly missing out on a lot of blessings and knowledge. All of the Bible was written under the inspiration of God. The Bible says we fail a lot due to the lack of knowledge, and the lack of knowledge is destructive. Having read and studied the Bible for 20 yrs from front to back, I have found that some of the old prophets from the old testament prophesied about the birth of Jesus. Do your self a favor and read the whole Bible, you will not regret it. I hope i have helped you some, but, i come from a holiness church and i know that we believe in seeking God in depths. Some denominations don't do this. God Bless You and I hope you find the understanding, knowledge,, and wisdom that you are seeking..

he Holy Bible is composed of the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament shows then the things that are coming; it is the shadow of the things coming. The Old Testament is perfected in the New Testament.
It is the worship in the Old Testament which is changed in the New Testament. The ten commandments and the more than 600 other commandments are for the Israelites alone; otherwise, no one is still alive now. For example: The first violation of the Sabbath was a man burning grasses on the Sabbath day. God commanded that man to be stoned to death. God commanded that no one should work on the Sabbath. Who among us do not work on the seventh day of the week or Saturdays?
God gave the manna to the Israelites and He commanded them to double what they gather on Fridays so that on the following day which is Saturday or Sabbath, no one shall do any work and they have to be in the synagogues to hear the Word of God. They listened to the message of God. God also commanded the Isrealites to work the field six years and on the seventh year, they should not do anything on the field even just gathering such as which automatically grows thereon. The Israelites violated this commandment and God punished them and He let them out of their land for 490 years as punishment for they violated such commandment for 70 years.
The first high priest in the Old Testament was Aaron and the succeeding high priests must come from his descendants and that was so. Is this possible up to now? In the New Testament, the High Priest is no other than the Lord Jesus Christ who is now in heaven and He is still the High Priest up to now, no man is ever appointed as high priest to render religious services to God.
I hope that by these, many will start pondering and further study the Holy Bible. There is no contradiction at all.

For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place be sought for the second. -Hebrews 8:7.
The Old testament is flawed.
Instead of the dead legalism of the Old, God tells us:
I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts.-Hebrews 8:10.
In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old, is ready to vanish away. -Hebrews 8:13.
The old Testament is nothing but history. It only shows us what was, and what we must avoid becoming.
If one cannot grasp this simple lesson, having a Bible is useless, and marking passages does no good whatsoever.

We are no longer under the old Law, save for the Ten Commandments, which were reinforced and condensed into Two commandments by Jesus.
I agree that if you want to know about God you should start in the Gospels and go forward from there. The more you know about the New Testament, the more the Old Testament will make sense.
The Old Testament is very important to us as Christians for two reasons. First, it lists the prophecies by which we would know that Jesus Christ is the Son of the God. Second, it is a beautiful picture of New Testament truths. For example, the priests clothing and description of the Tabernacle is about the picture of Jesus Christ and how he would save us.
Another example, in the story about King Agag and his people (OT), the Hebrews were told to kill all of them. They did not, and left King Ahgag alive. He fathered some children before his death and later caused some awful problems for Esther and the Hebrews later on. The Prophet of God at the time cursed the Hebrews and took a sword and chopped Agag into little pieces. A gruesome picture, yes. What does it mean for Christians today? When we rid our lives of sin, we should do it completely, leave no trace of the old sin left, or it may come back to haunt us. I hope this helped you.

Just like any material you read you must use your best judgment ...Your actions are your responsibility both morally and ethically if you are the average reasonable person whether testament or Richard Dawkins you are subject to the law... And the law does not subscribe to religious beliefs in action that are in violation of the constitution or local ordinances it only protects the right to believe in itself.quite simply put religion is not exculpatory above the law.judgment is in this life.No human sacrifices or murders in gods name thank you .

It would be a shame to remove passages from the Old Testament, because they help us to understand the New Testament and the writings of other prophets. Yes, you are right, we are not required to perform animal sacrifices anymore, because the death of Jesus Christ ended animal sacrifice. But it's important to know that people did it during Old Testament times, because their animal sacrifices foretold the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. I don't need to know how to kill birds, but I can learn from how detailed the instructions were about how seriously God took it and how meaningful these rituals were in foreshadowing the death of Jesus Christ. There are many, many references to the Old Testament in the New Testament, and the teachings of the prophets may still apply to us, albeit in different ways. As you read the Bible, the Holy Ghost can help you to understand the scripture in a way that's meaningful and personal for your needs.
The people who wrote the New Testament grew up in a culture where they were very familiar with the writings of the Old Testament, so reading the Old Testament helps us to understand where the writers of the New Testament were coming from.
Also, prophets who wrote during Old Testament times had the ability to see forward into our day as well, and often their prophecies cover our times as well as events that would happen during the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ. The prophet Isaiah, for example, made many prophecies that applied to the near future of his people as well as the people of the last days.
I personally think, why wouldn't you want as much of the word of God as possible?

yea it dont make since to me, kill in one part lovey dovey in the other, it really boils down to how society changes, when the old testament was written is right when civilization first appeared and with that was many of the ancient rules that went with it like you have in native tribes " human sacrifices" as time goes on it changes to more of a modern way of thinking
