I have this problem with my belly button, it is painful when it is touched. It happens every now and again but the pain goes away after 2 days and doesnt return until weeks or months later. It feels more painful if i touch the top of my belly button and if i feel the top part I can sort of feel inside not a lump but a hardened ring, like it feels like there is a ring inside but its not soft like ususal it feels like the cartiledge in our ear and it hurts. It couldnt be a hernia could it because it has been coming and going for years. What could it be?

Hernia!! Which means that a part of your intestine has ruptured. My friend had one , waited awhile, finally did something about it---sorry to say she is no longer here--the dr.s stated that it wasn;t the cause, but it didn't hekp her physical situation, Please go and have it looked at. Take Care of Yourself!!!

Seek the advice of a physician or other qualified health care professional ASAP... with any questions you have regarding your possible medical condition. it could be something serious with long term effects .. an ultrasonograph (ultrasound) might help

you can not say hernia at this point, a doc should perform an abdominal ultrasound or CT scan to know what's inside. please see your doc asap.
