A megapixel is equal to 1 million pixels.

Pixels are dots of three colors that make up a picture. The more the pixels the better the resolution and ability to increase the size of the picture.

Resolution is also increased through interpolation, which combines colors of nearby pixels. So if one pixel is blue and the other is red, it will add a blue-red pixel in between.

A Pixel is an abbreviation of "Picture Element". Picture elements are the small digital dots that fill your computer screen to make up the overall picture that you see.

Mega is a standard prefix meaning one million. so a megapixel is one million pixels, or one million dots in your image.

If your computer screen is set to 800 x 600 this means it is 800 dots wide by 600 dots high. Multiply this together to get 480 000 dots, or in other words, 0.48 of a megapixel.

Many modern computer screens run at 1024 x 768 which equals 783 432 dots or just over 3/4 of a megapixel.

My Nikon D50 produces pictures that are 3000 dots wide and 200 dots high making 6 000 000 dots or 6 megapixels.

Hope this helps.

A megapixel is an individual tiny dot of light that is the basic unit from which the images on a computer or television screen are made... I don't know if it's actually equal to the size of anything else.
