Madonna's answer is somewhat inaccurate. The requirement for 800,000 baht in a Thai bank account is only one option.

Since you don't mention your age or reason for a one year visa, please note there are a number of different visas available. The easiest to start with is a one year, multiple entry, Non-immigrant O Visa. Its cost is roughly $125.00 USD. You will be required to make border crossings every 90 days (not three months, 90 days). IF you qualify for a retirement visa and wish to pursue that you can do so from Thailand. You must have a valid Non-immigrant visa in your passport to convert to retirement visa.

The requirments for a retirement visa are:
At least age 50

Have 800,000 baht in a Thai bank for at least 3 months OR

Have any amount in a Thai bank and a letter from your embassy notarized that you have an income of at least 65,000 baht per month.

Copies of picture page, current visa, TM card (entry card), letter from your Thai bank verifying account info,

2 passport pictures,

1,900 baht for visa fee

After getting the retirement visa, get a re-entry permit as well. Fee is 1,000 baht for single entry or 3,800 for multiple entry. I suggest single entry unless you intend to leave Thailand more than 3 times a year.

NOTE: If you leave Thailand with a valid retirement visa and you leave the country WITHOUT a valid re-entry permit, you will be allowed to re-enter but your retirement visa is null and void and you must start over....new Non-immigrant visa, new retirement visa, all the paperwork and application forms, letters, photos, etc.

There are many types of visas that will allow you to stay in Thailand for a year. Work visas, marriage visas and retirement visas among others. The requirements vary depending on what type of visa you are applying for. If you are over 50 yrs. old, a retirement visa is fairly easy, you need to fulfill the general requirements, as well as show financial solvency, either a deposit into a Thai Bank of 800,000 baht or a monthly income, no criminal record, certificate of health and a few other things. It would take too long here to explain everything you need to know, look for the Thai Embassy website for the EU or your country and follow the link to consular affairs or visas and you will get all the information you need. The Thai Embassy in the U.S. has a website at www.thaiembdc.org that provides information for people of all countries. Good luck!

The easiest one is the retirement visa. You've got to be over 50 yrs old and must deposit at least 800'000 baht in a Thai bank account (new: for 6 months). Fot other visa types pls inform yourself at the Thai Embassy.
