Head of household question. I am the "bread winner', and my boyfriend is a full time student, he made less that $3,300 last year and we've lived together for the full year of 2006. I've been researching the term head of household, and it appears to have more to do with someone who has a dependant family member. Is it possible for me to file as head of household rather than single status?
Thanks in advance!

No, you do not qualify as head of household. Your boyfriend may meet the requirements to be your qualifying relative if the gross income and support tests are met, but he is not your qualifying person for head of household purposes.

A person who is your qualifying relative only because he or she lived with you all year as a member of your household is not a qualifying person.

No, you can't. For someone to file head of household they have to have a dependent who is closely related to them. Even cousins don't qualify. While boyfriends and girlfriends can sometimes qualify as dependents, they can't qualify the person claiming them to file as head of household.

I'm pretty sure that if you aren't married, you have to file single, and if you are filing as single head of household wouldn't apply to you at all. You can't file together unless you are married or have a child together. That's the information my accountant gave me.

As long as you aren't married, which it seems you're not, then you can file as head of household if you provided more of the expenses for it than anyone else living with you.
