Expect to be treated like dirt by airline staff.
Expect Security akin to a mugging
Expect to be in a middle seat
Expect none or dog food to be thrown your way

Net net, if travel was graceless when you last flew, today it's like taking a Greyhound bus.

If you are traveling overseas, expect better.

If it's been quite a few years, one thing you'll probably notice is the lack of legroom. Try to get an aisle seat for comfort.

Here's some TSA regs as to what you can bring on the plane (note specifically the liquids-in-a-plastic-bag deal):

Get to the airport a couple of hours early; the security line can be slow. You'll take off your shoes (and just about everything else) and put everything in plastic bins to go through the line.

Have your I.D. and boarding pass readily available.

Crowded even during off-peak times. Get to the airport about 2 hours before your flight to get through Homeland Security garbage. Put your toiletries in a clear plastic bag.

Try and get a window seat.
