Nothing already said isn't incorrect, but I would argue the answers are not completely correct.

Digital communications does not mean 0 and 1's as the popular belief says. Digital communications is all about detecting the energy location in the transmitted signal.

There system out there that use a 256-ary constellation of transmission. This means that there are 256 unique symbols could possibly be transmitted ... not just 0 and 1.

Digital comm. allows for error correction codes to be used to help increase the effective SNR.

Communication of information in digital form. For example, music can be sent over electrical wires as an analog signal, or as a digital signal. Digital signals are all arrangements of 0 and 1. Digital signals are free from noise. The fidelity of signal transmission and reproduction is better controlled in digital systems.

Your old film camera is an analog device. Your digital camera is a digital device, where the light falling on the detector is digitised and stored in a memory device and can be transferred to a PC or a printer using USB ports.

Digital communication is revolutionising the modern present day life.

Digital communications refers to the field of study concerned with the transmission of digital data. This is in contrast with analog communications. While analog communications use a continuously varying signal, a digital transmission can be broken down into discrete messages. Transmitting data in discrete messages allows for greater signal processing capability. The ability to process a communications signal means that errors caused by random processes can be detected and corrected. Digital signals can also be sampled instead of continuously monitored and multiple signals can be multiplexed together to form one signal.

Because of all these advantages, and because recent advances in wideband communication channels and solid-state electronics have allowed scientists to fully realize these advantages, digital communications has grown quickly. Digital communications is quickly edging out analog communication because of the vast demand to transmit computer data and the ability of digital communiations to do so.

An analog recording is one where the original sound signal is modulated onto another physical signal carried on some media or substrate such as the groove of a gramophone disc or the iron filings of a magnetic tape. A physical quantity in the medium (e.g., the intensity of the magnetic field) is directly related, or analogous, to the physical properties of the sound (e.g, the amplitude, phase, etc.).

A digital recording is produced by first converting the physical properties of the original sound into digital information (stored as bits) which can then be decoded for reproduction. The conversion process can be susceptible to noise and imperfection. However, the nature of the physical medium is immaterial in recovery of the encoded information as long as the individual bits can be recovered.

Analog communication uses continuously varying signals. In digital communications, only discrete values are used. Think of analog being like real numbers and digital being like integers. When using digital, the real signal is "quantized", that is, represented by the closest digital value. With enough quantization levels, the digital signal cannot be distinquished from the original analog.
