basics tequila, gin, vodka, and rum. cheap with out these you cannot make long island ice teas. mixers sweet and sour, margarita mix, half and half, coke, cranberry juice, and orange juice. with these you can make pretty much any thing.
now we are talking about middle age folks so i would get a decent scotch (dewers, cutty, if you feeling frisky glenfiddich) and good bourbon (makers) good vodka (belveder) and gin (tangery)
and few cordals kalua, baileys, and peach shnapps
get a some bud lite always a party favorite and miller lite.
but you might what to also add a few killigans or shiner bock
somthing with flavor.
a few bottles of white wine slightly sweet (10 evolution) and a good strong red (shiraz, or cabernet)(red knot is a good shiraz)
with this list the party will be fun and be sure to find a bartender.
not sucks more than to be stuck behind the bar when every one else is having fun.

Definetly start with dad's favorite. Bourbon, or Scotch or what HE likes. You can find all kinds of drink receipes either on line or at your local liquor store. Then get a few other distilled spirits. Don't forget the mixers. A couple of cases of beer would be nice to have, and a lot of ladies like Margaritas, or Wine Coolers. Have fun.

Do they still make wine coolers?

Whatever the birthday boy's favorite should be first. And have specialty cocktail known that can be made from the same liquor.

If he likes:::::::Try this cocktail:
Vodka::::::::::::Bleu & Green Martini's (Olives stuffed with bleu cheese
Rum::::::::::::::Mojitos
Gin::::::::::::::::Poached Pear (Pear Nectar, Gin, Club soda and campari)
Tequila::::::::::Tequila Sunrise
Champagne:::Bellini
Bourbon:::::::::Mint Julep
Whisk(e)y:::::::Lemon Soda (muddled lemon, whiskey, simple syrup & club soda)

I recommend 3 beers: A domestic, a light domestic and an import
2 wines: a simple red & a simple white

TONS of ice (and I mean ALOT... for some reason, parties always run out and someone has to make a run.) Maybe you can do something simple like a punch to keep the impatient people happy and saucy.

Stick with your basics: Vodka, rum, gin, tequila, whiskey, triple sec.

Tell your dad I said HAPPY 50th! =D

How about an eggnog punch? The people could spike it if they wished. 1 3/4 to 2 qt French vanilla or cinnamon ice cream 2 qt dairy eggnog or canned eggnog, chilled ( 8 cups ) 1 liter cream soda chilled peppermint sticks, cinnamon sticks and/or candy canes ( optional ) Ground cinnamon Place ice cream in an extra large punch bowl. Add half the eggnog.Stir and mash mixture ( potato masher will work well ) until mixture is well combined. Stir in the remaining egg nog. Slowly pour in the cream soda, stirring to combine. To each glass add a peppermint stick, cinnamon stick or a candy cane.Dust each serving with cinnamon. Makes about 24 ( 6 oz ) servings ENJOY

vodka, rum, gin, whisky (rye in Canada)
coke, sprite, ginger ale
OJ, tomato juice
beer
wine
(This is not a night club so i would not worry about having too many different drinks - one of the above should satisfy just about everybody.)

Most people like to have their normal highball.
But you could also make a nice big punch (maybe one with alcohol and one without).

You should at the least have whiskey (scotch, bourbon, and irish) as well as vodka, brandy, and gin.
