A gold wedding band would probably be relatively easy to pass, whereas a solitaire engagement ring may cause a few more problems. Keep an eye on his bowel movements and monitor him for normal constitution and frequency. It should be passed within 48 hours of being swallowed. If it doesn't turn up, and it doesn't come out, let his pediatrician know. Right now, it really doesn't seem like an emergency. Best of luck to you.

Sounds fairly harmless. Pure gold is very inert. High-purity gold is fairly inert, possibly even with respect to stomach acid.

It might not show up on an xray if the 'view' is not obstructed by bone when the xray was being taken.

Obviously a bit of prospecting may result in a valuable dividend!

<>Depending on the size of the ring, he may have problems passing it (if he did swallow it). If it is of any size, he may not have swallowed it but spit it out somewhere. If it does not turn up (in the house or in his excrement) in a couple days, take him to the doctor for that xray.
