I would like to go into a specific field of medical studies. Are there any that has normal working hours? I know I might have to work long shifts during residency but after that is there any field that allows me to actually spend time with my family?

anesthesiology, radiology, and ER docs all have "shift work"- meaning they work a set shift, and then go home and forget about their job. no worrying about patients calling with questions. no need to carry a beeper when not on the job. just keep in mind you'll still need to do your share of overnight "on call" shifts, but in general those fields are good if you want designated time off to spend with family uninterrupted.

Other than on call schedules, every kind of doctor CAN CHOOSE to limit their working hours to a 'normal' 50 hour week or so. The problem is, the demand isn't about external needs (money, job 'requirements') at that point...it's about knowing that you're making a difference in so many people's lives.

But to specifically answer your question...plastic surgeons.

Ophthalmology, ENT, Dermatology, Physiatry, Public Health, Proctology, probably a few more, but any will have the occasional night or weekend call

Become a skin specialist. You will be least likely to be on night duty.
